Flexibility - More than just a Trend
More than just a Trend
What comes to mind when you hear “flexible workplace”?
· Freedom to work from home
· No commute
· Flexible work hours
Flexibility can mean different things to different people. However, the bottom line is that “working from home” or “flexible workplace” is more than just a trend nowadays; it is becoming a business staple.
The Proof is in the Pudding
According to LinkedIn’s Talent Blog, in 2017 31% of users say flexible work arrangements are very important to them when considering a job. Post-Covid-19, many people are now looking for increased flexibility after working from home.
If companies put the right policies in place and have a structured plan, flexibility can benefit everyone. Robert Half lists out seven benefits of offering flexibility including reduced overhead costs, increased productivity and creativity, ease of management, improved well-being and employee satisfaction, better staff retention, and more attracted talent.

A True Test
At Persolvent, we were able to make a seamless shift to the entire team working remotely two weeks before stay-at-home orders were in place for Covid-19. We had developed and implemented flexible work options over the past year, so this was a great test for us. In the transition, the team didn’t miss a beat; our work ethic remained efficient, our team culture stood strong, and our IT team quickly solved any issues and provided all the resources needed.
For work related communication, all our meetings and trainings transitioned to virtual communication on Microsoft Teams. Most of our teams implemented a virtual daily check-in. For company updates and welcoming new team members, we had company-wide video meetings. We conducted surveys to receive feedback and suggestions for how we could continue to improve.
On the social side, we have kept the conversation flowing via Slack chats about remote-work best practices and tips, recipe ideas, and pet photos. Our Fun Committee created a virtual break room, hosted virtual happy hours and team trivia events and threw a luau-themed Virtual Summer Party in July.
One positive of all this is we are looking at flexible workplace settings with a fresh perspective. Going forward, some team members can’t wait to be back in the office while others are investigating working remotely more often. They have found it works well for them, that team communication is unimpeded, and their productivity is enhanced.
We would love to know. How is your company thinking about this “trend”?
